Overview
See Dubrovnik’s Old Town the way locals do in the quiet season, with a guide who knows the story behind every wall and a long, hearty lunch along the way. Starting at Onofrio’s Great Fountain, you’ll walk the polished limestone of the Stradun and wind past the Franciscan Monastery, the Rector’s Palace, the Cathedral and the baroque Jesuit Staircase, hearing how the tiny Republic of Ragusa traded its way across the Mediterranean for centuries.
Then, warm up at a local tavern over a platter of regional cheese and prosciutto, a plate of Croatian black ink risotto and a glass of local wine. Finish at the Old Port, where merchant ships once set sail, with a slice of carob cake made from the dark pods that grow all along the Dalmatian Coast. This Secret Food Tours walk trades a long string of stops for 3 generous tastings and more time for the stories!

What to expect
45m
Tucked against the eastern walls of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, the Old Port was once the base for the Republic of Ragusa’s merchant fleet, which traded salt, wine and spices across the Mediterranean. Today fishing boats and small ferries to Lokrum Island still tie up beneath the medieval fortifications, and the view across the harbour is one of the best in the city.
Stradun
45m
Stradun, also called Placa, is the Old Town’s main street, running about 300 metres of limestone polished smooth by centuries of footsteps from Pile Gate to Luža Square. Its matching stone facades date from the rebuilding after the great earthquake of 1667, and the side alleys branching off it lead to some of the city’s oldest family-run konobas.
The Franciscan Church and Monastery
45m
Just inside Pile Gate in the Old Town, the 14th-century Franciscan Monastery is known for its quiet Romanesque cloister and a pharmacy that has been operating since 1317, one of the oldest still working in Europe. The friars’ recipes for herbal remedies and creams are still made and sold here today.
45m
Dubrovnik sits at the southern end of the Dalmatian Coast, a stretch of Adriatic shoreline where olive groves, vineyards and fishing villages have shaped the local diet for centuries. That heritage shows up on the table in dishes like air-dried pršut, Ston oysters, black squid-ink risotto and rožata, Dubrovnik’s own caramel custard.
