Cu Chi Tunnels Private Tour: Avoid the Crowds at Ben Duoc

Hotel lobby pickup, included anywhere in District 1 — we'll confirm your exact time with you the evening before. If your hotel sits outside District 1, or you'd simply rather meet us on the way, the Saigon Opera House (Municipal Theatre, 7 Lam Son Square) is our standing meeting point: central, easy to find, impossible to miss.

On the road to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a 30-minute stop at Lang Viet Lacquer opens a quieter window into Vietnam. Founded as a 27/7 enterprise — the state programme named for Vietnam's War Invalids and Martyrs Day — the workshop gives steady work to people with disabilities and to families affected by Agent Orange, many in rural areas where jobs are scarce.

Inside, artisans practise son mai, the traditional Vietnamese lacquer art: layer upon layer of natural resin, sanded and polished by hand over weeks, inlaid with duck eggshell, mother-of-pearl and gold leaf. A single panel may pass through twenty stages and a dozen pairs of hands before its surface reaches that deep, mirror-like glow. Vases, lacquered plates, jewellery boxes and decorative panels fill the showroom, each carrying both a centuries-old craft and the dignity of the people who made it.

A short stop, but a memorable one — and whatever you carry home from here comes with a story worth telling.

The Cu Chi Tunnels system, located just outside Ho Chi Minh City, is a fascinating journey into Vietnam's wartime history. This unique system offers a hands-on experience, allowing visitors to explore the intricate network of underground tunnels used by Viet Cong soldiers during the Vietnam War. As you navigate the narrow, dimly lit passages, you'll gain a firsthand understanding of the ingenious strategies and sheer resilience that defined the Vietnamese resistance. The museum features original tunnel entrances, hidden trapdoors, and living quarters, providing an authentic glimpse into the daily life of the soldiers. Interactive exhibits, including wartime relics and poignant photographs, vividly depict the harsh realities of tunnel warfare. Above ground, visitors can see craters from B-52 bombings and try their hand at shooting era-specific firearms. The Cu Chi Tunnels system is more than a historical site; it's a powerful tribute to human ingenuity. endurance, offers an experience

After you climb out of the Cu Chi Tunnels, the crack of live gunfire from the range next door pulls the history sharply into the present. This is the only place in Vietnam where a visitor can fire a real firearm, and the weapons on the line are the originals — AK-47s, M16s and carbines carried through the Vietnam War, their stocks worn smooth by decades of hands.

Rounds cost around 60,000–70,000 VND each, with a minimum of 10 for a manual rifle and 20 for an automatic, so it is not a cheap five minutes. But for most travellers it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. An instructor mounts the rifle on the stand for you, sets your stance, lines up the sights and stays at your shoulder for every shot. Ear protection is provided, and nobody is rushed.

Prefer not to shoot? Stand at the rail and watch. The sound alone tells you something the tunnels cannot.

We bring you back the same way we collected you — to your hotel door, to any address in District 1, or to the Saigon Opera House if that suits your evening plans better. Just tell us which you prefer when you book.
