You begin inside the basilica, already surrounded by its vast marble interior, before heading toward the entrance for the dome ascent.
At the top, Rome opens up beneath you — terracotta rooftops, the sweep of St. Peter’s Square, and the city stretching toward the hills. It’s the highest viewpoint in the Vatican and one of the most iconic panoramas in the city. Many visitors say it’s the highlight of their entire Vatican visit.
