Pashupatinath Temple
50m · Admission ticket not included
Pashupatinath is not just a temple; it is the spiritual heart of Nepal. Located on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River in Kathmandu, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the holiest Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as Pashupati, the "Lord of all beings" .
The temple's history is deeply rooted in legend. One myth tells of Shiva and Parvati taking the form of antelopes in the forest. When the gods caught him, one of his horns broke, which was later venerated as a divine linga . The main temple, a stunning example of pagoda architecture, features two-tiered copper roofs with gold covering and four silver-plated doors . Within the sanctum sanctorum lies a unique stone mukhalinga with four faces of Shiva, always adorned in golden attire .
The vast complex contains hundreds of temples and shrines. Notably, its eastern banks feature sacred cremation ghats, where Hindu funeral rites are performed publicly, reflecting the cycle of death and rebirth .
