Overview

Tadao Ando, one of Japan’s most internationally celebrated architects, is known for transforming simple materials such as concrete, light, and water into extraordinary architectural experiences. But what makes his buildings so distinctive, and how can we learn to see them through an architect’s eyes?

Join an architect guide on a journey through Osaka to discover the ideas behind Ando’s work. Together, we’ll explore his distinctive use of concrete, light, geometry and nature, and consider why his seemingly simple spaces can evoke such powerful responses.

Rather than merely looking at buildings, we’ll ask what they are trying to do for us. Why does a particular space make us pause? How can simplicity bring a sense of calm to a busy city? And what might architecture teach us about the way we want to live?

By the end of the tour, you may find that you see not only Tadao Ando’s buildings differently, but the ordinary spaces of everyday life as well.

What to expect

  1. Nakanoshima Children's Book Forest
    1h
Ando-designed children's library with sculptural concrete architecture and a dramatic interior. A strong public-facing stop where visitors can experience the space, subject to entry arrangements.
  2. Nippombashi
    30m
Nippombashi House - A compact residential work by Tadao Ando worth discussing for its use of space and exposed concrete. Public access appears to depend on gallery events or opening arrangements, so verify access before advertising an interior visit.
  3. Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Museum
    1h · Admission ticket included
In Higashiosaka, this museum combines Ando's concrete architecture with a striking, multi-storey wall of books. It's a particularly good example of architecture designed around a person's intellectual world.
  4. Oyodo-cho
    30m
Row House (Azuma House) - One of Ando's defining early works: a narrow concrete house organized around an open-air courtyard. It is a private residence, so plan for an exterior explanation rather than assuming entry.
  5. Osakasayama
    2h
Osaka Prefectural Sayamaike Museum - A compelling Ando-designed museum using water, concrete, geometry, and landscape. It's in southern Osaka Prefecture, so it works better as part of a longer architectural excursion than a compact city-center walk.
