Enjoy a relaxing Japanese daily sweets experience in Kyoto while making freshly prepared mitarashi dango and tasting Japanese tea.
Begin with a seasonal welcome tea while your host introduces the history of dango and the role of wagashi in everyday Japanese life. Then, learn how to prepare soft dango dough, shape it by hand, boil the dumplings, and place them on skewers. Finish your dango with homemade mitarashi sauce, made with brown sugar and soy sauce.
Enjoy your freshly made dango while tasting two varieties of Japanese tea and discovering how their flavors pair with the sweet and savory sauce.
This is not a formal tea ceremony or a professional cooking class. It is a warm and relaxed introduction to the everyday culture of enjoying Japanese sweets and tea. Beginners are welcome, and each guest will receive friendly guidance in a small group of up to four people.
This experience was created by Aoi, a Kyoto-based wagashi artisan and the founder of Oyatsu Aoi in Kyoto and Sweets Oyatsu in Houston.
