Overview

Mt. Takao is one of the world’s most popular mountains, located just about an hour from central Tokyo. Since being awarded three Michelin stars in 2007, it has attracted around 3 million visitors every year.

But Mt. Takao is much more than a popular tourist destination. It is a sacred mountain where nature, history, and spirituality come together.

As we trek through the mountain, surrounded by more than 1,600 species of plants, we will discover the fascinating history of Japanese mountain worship and Esoteric Buddhism, traditions that have been deeply rooted in Mt. Takao for centuries.

Your trek will be led by a JMGA-certified trekking guide and UIMLA International Mountain Leader, who will help you experience not only the natural beauty of Mt. Takao but also its rich cultural and spiritual heritage.

What to expect

The trek starts at Takaosanguchi Station and follows the mountain trails to the summit of Mt. Takao. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the history and traditions of Japanese mountain worship and Esoteric Buddhism. As an optional experience, you can participate in a Goma fire ritual at Yakuo-in Temple, one of the highlights of Mt. Takao. The cable car can also be used upon request, allowing you to enjoy Mt. Takao at a more relaxed pace.
