Overview

Glen Affric is often called the finest glen in Scotland, and this is a full day in it rather than a look at it. A nine-hour private day from Inverness taking in Dog Falls, the water at Affric before the wind gets up, and Plodda Falls on the way home, through the largest fragment of ancient Caledonian pinewood left in the country. The pace is yours - if the light is right we stay until it is not. One group per day, in a fully electric car that makes no noise at a viewpoint.

What's included

  • All mileage and charging
  • The car to your party for the whole day
  • Collection from your door in Inverness and back again
  • Meals
  • Boots & Waterproofs
  • Additional Activities such as Horse Rides or Boat Trips

What to expect

  1. Dog Falls
    45m
A gorge on the River Affric where the water narrows and drops through rock, with a footbridge over the top of it. There is a short waymarked loop through the pines from the car park if you want it, or a two-minute walk down to the falls if you do not. This is also where the road stops running through farmland and starts running through forest.
  2. Glen Affric National Nature Reserve
    2h 30m
This is what the day is for, and the longest stop on it. Ancient Caledonian pinewood - the real thing rather than plantation - standing over water that goes flat calm before the wind finds it. Paths run from the car park in every direction: a level loop of about a mile, a longer circuit round the loch, and proper hill walks from the same spot if the legs and the weather agree. We decide which on the morning. There are public toilets here, and they are the last at the top of the glen.
  3. Plodda Falls
    1h 15m
A Victorian viewing platform cantilevered out over the lip of the fall, so you look straight down the drop rather than up at it. The walk in runs through Douglas firs planted in the 1880s, among the tallest trees in Britain. It is a steep climb coming back up and the steps are wet more often than not, so sensible footwear helps.
  4. Drumnadrochit
    45m
Drumnadrochit sits where Glen Urquhart comes down to Loch Ness, and it is the last village before Inverness. We stop at the Loch Ness Hub in the middle of it, which is community-run and has a cafe and toilets - a better end to a day than a service station. If you would rather spend the half hour walking round the village, that works just as well.
