Overview

Step behind the monumental facades of East Germany's showpiece city and dive into the raw, booming reality of its industrial heart. This tour highlights the extreme contrast between the utopian socialist architecture that was supposed to glorify the worker and the soot-covered, deafening reality of the heavy engineering districts where these workers actually lived and toiled. Discover a world full of propaganda, pride, surveillance, and the struggle for survival.

The first newly built cultural center of the GDR, which was supposed to offer high culture to the industrial proletariat.
  3. Technikmuseum Magdeburg

Housed in the former Krupp-Gruson factory, this museum displays the massive, deafening machines that were built and operated by the city's workers.
  4. 10m
The historical social center of the Buckau district, which reveals the dense, everyday reality of the working class.
  5. 10m
The narrowest part of the main street, which shows the cramped, pre-socialist industrial housing that survived the GDR's urban planning.
