Overview

Crack open San Francisco's most famous culinary illusion. Wander from glowing banquet halls and gilded dragon eaves to temple sanctuaries and historic bakeries as we unmask the real origin of the fortune cookie. Trace its journey from nineteenth-century Kyoto shrine crackers to the Japanese Tea Garden, reveal how the wartime trauma of Executive Order 9066 severed Japanese bakeries from their creations, and discover how Chinese entrepreneurs reinvented the treat for American diners. It is an extraordinary tale of survival, commercial theater, and culinary reinvention.
