Step into a quiet private space within the grounds of a Zen temple normally closed to the public. Overlooking a garden designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by Kyoto City, create your own “Scented Water,” inspired by fragrant-water making from the Edo period.
The flowers and plants used in the experience are selected according to Japan’s 24 solar terms. After a short introduction, smell the seasonal botanicals one by one and choose your favorites.
Place your selected plants in a small glass still. As steam rises, cools, and gradually turns into scented drops, quietly watch each drop form while overlooking the garden. This slow, peaceful time spent waiting is at the heart of the experience.
While the distillation continues, enjoy Uji matcha rooted in more than 700 years of tencha cultivation tradition, together with konpeito from a long-established Kyoto confectioner.
At the end, bottle the Scented Water you created and take it home as a memory of your time in Kyoto.
