Overview

Colmar becomes an interactive treasure hunt. Most visitors see Colmar from a day-trip bus between two Alsace villages - this walk gives you the town itself, at your own pace. Follow a route from the Koifhus and the little Manneken-Pis along the Rue des Marchands to the canals of La Petite Venise, out to the Bartholdi monument and back past the Unterlinden Museum to the Maison Pfister, and at every one of the 12 stops solve a puzzle you find in the surroundings - the clue is around you, not on a screen. Sightseeing, a continuous story and a light brain-teaser rolled into one, played at your own pace on your phone: in the browser with no account needed, or in the CityWalkGems app (Google Play). No live guide: just open the link and start exploring. Perfect before or after the Christmas market, or in the hours between two trains.

What to expect

  1. Koifhus (Old Custom House)
    10m
The starting point of the puzzle walk. Solve your first riddle on the square of the old Custom House, at the little Manneken-Pis statue, then follow the route along the Rue des Marchands.
  2. Little Venice
    10m
Solve a riddle along the canals of La Petite Venise, with its half-timbered houses, flower boxes and the old fishmongers' quay - the most photographed corner of Alsace.
  3. Old Town
    30m
Several riddles take you through the old town of Colmar - past the Bartholdi monument, the Unterlinden Museum and the Hansi museum (seen from outside), the old merchant streets and quiet corners most day-trip buses never reach.
