Discover one of São Jorge’s most iconic landscapes on a guided hike along the official PR01SJ trail from Serra do Topo to Fajã dos Cubres.
Begin high in Serra do Topo and descend around 700 metres through changing ecological zones, endemic vegetation, streams and waterfalls. As the trail approaches the north coast, the landscape opens towards the dramatic cliffs and remote fajãs below.
Continue to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, one of the most remarkable coastal landscapes in the Azores. Learn how seismic activity and cliff erosion shaped these fertile coastal platforms and explore a protected environment known for its lagoon, volcanic geology and rich biodiversity.
Follow the coastal trail towards Fajã dos Cubres, passing through a landscape that forms the only coastal lagoon system in the Azores. Along the way, your guide explains the area’s geology, ecology and the traditional communities that once depended on these isolated fajãs.
When conditions allow, there may also be opportunities to swim in a waterfall, lagoon or the Atlantic.
The linear trail covers 9.3 km, with around 2.5 hours of walking and a total activity duration of approximately 3.5 hours.
