Discover one of São Jorge’s most secluded fajãs on this guided hike along the official PRC05SJ trail. Starting near the Ermida de Santo António on the island’s north coast, descend a steep historic path through the dramatic tectonic cliffs toward Fajã do Além.
Along the way, cross streams, waterfalls and natural springs where fresh water emerges directly from the rock, while enjoying wide views over the Atlantic and São Jorge’s rugged coastline.
At Fajã do Além, explore a remarkably preserved landscape shaped by generations of traditional farming. See old wine cellars, livestock pens, agricultural structures and areas once used for vineyards and yam cultivation while learning about the seasonal migrations known locally as “mudas.”
After exploring the fajã, climb back along the same dramatic cliff landscape to the starting point. The circular route covers 4.7 km, with approximately 2.5 hours of hiking and a total activity duration of around 3.5 hours.
