Overview
São Jorge contains eight recognized geosites within the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark, from its central volcanic ridge to lava fajãs, coastal cliffs and historic volcanic landscapes.
Rather than simply visiting viewpoints, this tour explains the processes behind what you see. Learn how successive episodes of basaltic fissure volcanism created São Jorge’s long, narrow shape and how erosion, earthquakes and tectonic activity continue to transform the island.
A nature guide with a university degree provides the scientific context while keeping the experience accessible to all ages.
Lunch, transportation, visits and insurance are included, while the itinerary is adapted according to your starting point and conditions on the island.

What to expect
Casa do Parque de Sao Jorge
45m
Begin or complement your geological journey at São Jorge Natural Park’s visitor center in Norte Grande. Explore the permanent “Treasuries of the Park” exhibition, with information on the island’s protected areas, geology, biodiversity and cultural heritage. Multimedia displays introduce São Jorge’s Ramsar wetlands and natural environments, while documentaries provide additional context about the island’s famous fajãs.
Pico da Esperanca
30m
Travel through São Jorge’s mountainous backbone, formed by successive episodes of basaltic fissure volcanism. The central ridge contains numerous volcanic cones, eruptive fissures and small crater depressions and is one of the island’s priority geosites. Weather permitting, the route includes views around Pico da Esperança, São Jorge’s highest point at 1,053 metres, with panoramas towards the other islands of the Central Group.
Piscina Natural da Faja do Ouvidor
45m
Discover one of the best places to see São Jorge’s volcanic coastline at close range. Fajã do Ouvidor is a lava delta created by basaltic flows from the central volcanic ridge around 2,530 years ago. Its shoreline displays prismatic basalt formations, lava arches, sea caves and natural swimming pools, including the famous Poça Simão Dias. When conditions allow, there may be time for swimming or snorkeling among these volcanic formations.
