What to expect
Sao Jorge
Pass by
Walk through the remarkable Central Plateau of São Jorge, an elevated landscape shaped by volcanic activity and now protected for its ecological importance. Mountain pastures, peat bogs, crater lagoons and endemic vegetation accompany the route, with changing views towards both sides of the narrow island and the Atlantic beyond.
This section of the trail is especially rich in natural detail, with wetlands, low vegetation and endemic species adapted to the cool, humid conditions of the plateau. Away from the coastal settlements, the landscape feels remote and untouched, offering one of the clearest examples of São Jorge’s protected interior.
Pico da Esperanca
Pass by
Reach Pico da Esperança, the highest point of São Jorge at 1,053 metres. From the summit area, weather permitting, enjoy sweeping views across the island and towards the other islands of the Central Group. The trail skirts the volcanic crater, where a small lagoon adds another distinctive feature to this dramatic highland landscape.
Around Pico da Esperança, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as the trail crosses one of the highest and most exposed parts of the island. On clear days, the elevated position provides an exceptional sense of São Jorge’s long, narrow shape, while the neighbouring volcanic peaks form a distinctive chain along the central ridge.
Piscina Natural da Faja do Ouvidor
Pass by
Descend from the central ridge towards the north coast, passing forested areas, agricultural tracks and the lower green slopes of São Jorge before arriving at Fajã do Ouvidor. Formed by ancient lava flows, this coastal platform is home to a sheltered harbour and natural bathing areas. Finish the experience beside the volcanic pools of Poça Simão Dias, with time to relax and, when conditions allow, enjoy a refreshing swim in the clear Atlantic water.
The arrival at Fajã do Ouvidor creates a striking contrast with the mountain landscape crossed earlier in the day. Basalt formations, steep coastal cliffs and clear Atlantic water surround the natural pools, making this a memorable place to finish the hike and enjoy the volcanic coastline at close range.
