Overview

Skip rushed, photo-only group sightseeing, and join this private half-day deep dive into Yu Garden and the Old City God Temple.

Wander elegant Ming-dynasty pavilions, ponds and rockwork, uncovering layered stories within this 460-year-old classical garden. The tour concludes at the City God Temple, the spiritual heart of Shanghai’s Old Town for more than 600 years.

Unlike standard tours, we move at a gentle pace and welcome your questions. Explore the lesser-known tales most guides leave out: the literati ideals built into the garden landscape, the dramatic history of Dianchun Hall and the Small Sword Society uprising, and the waterside scholar-gathering traditions celebrated in this garden.

What to expect

  1. Yu Garden
    10m
Chapter 1 - Before the Garden.
The Huxinting Teahouse was built in 1784, and the zigzag Nine-Turn Bridge has linked it to the old bazaar for over two centuries. This is where ordinary Shanghai came to meet, gossip and drink tea — a world apart from the elite garden we are about to enter. On the corner stands Lvbo Lang, the famous restaurant that has hosted visiting heads of state.
  2. Yu Garden
    25m · Admission ticket included
Chapter 2 — The Confucian family.
Sansui Hall and the Great Rockery. This is the garden's public face — filial piety, harvest wishes, the Confucian social order. The Great Rockery is where "heaven and humanity as one" stops being a phrase and becomes something you stand inside.
  3. Yu Garden
    35m · Admission ticket included
    Chapter 3 — The scholar's inner world.
Plum Wife and Crane Child, the Fish Pavilion, the Corridor of Echoes. Here the garden turns inward: the scholar who retired from office, the philosophy of simple joy, the art of "borrowed scenery" where a wall becomes a painting. Every plant is a moral symbol — we decode the plum, the orchid, the bamboo, and the chrysanthemum.
  4. Yu Garden
    15m · Admission ticket included
Chapter 4 — National memory in a garden.
Stop at Dianchun Hall within Yu Garden. Classical Chinese gardens are widely celebrated as peaceful retreats for pleasure and refined art. Few visitors realise that this hall served as headquarters for the Small Sword Society uprising back in 1853. Occurrences within these walls carried far‑reaching implications for the broader course of Shanghai’s history.
  5. Yu Garden
    20m · Admission ticket included
Chapter 5 — Waterside Scholar Gatherings.
Stop at Huijing Tower. This zone reveals a contrasting aesthetic within Yu Garden. Where the famous Great Rockery celebrates rugged mountain landscapes, this space centres entirely on water. Its winding waterways evoke the timeless tradition of flowing wine cups along brooks — an elegant pastime where ancient Chinese scholars gathered beside water to recite poetry and converse.
  6. Yu Garden
    25m · Admission ticket included
Chapter 6 — The stone that explains everything.
We end at Yu Linglong, the Jade Exquisite Stone. "Thin, wrinkled, leaky, transparent" — four words that define 1,000 years of Chinese garden aesthetics. Your guide will explain why this one stone is worth the whole trip, and what it tells you about the Chinese way of seeing.
  7. Yu Garden
    20m
Chapter 7 — The spiritual city.
Every old Chinese town had a city god: the spiritual mayor who watched over the safety and fortune of its people. Shanghai's own has lived here for over six centuries. Step inside and the smell of incense, the ringing bells and the crowds of worshippers make it clear this is not a museum — it is a living temple. Along the way, look for the six-meter copper abacus inside: one side has no beads at all, a gentle reminder that karma keeps its own accounts.
