In this hands-on experience, travelers will be introduced to the world of the Atabaque, one of the most important instruments in Afro-Brazilian culture.
We will begin with a brief introduction to the history of the instrument and its role in Brazil's cultural, spiritual, and musical traditions. Each participant will then receive an Atabaque and learn basic playing techniques in a welcoming and interactive environment.
Throughout the workshop, participants will learn four traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms: Ijexá, Jurema, Adarrum, and Maculelê. Beyond learning how to play each rhythm, travelers will discover their origins, meanings, and cultural significance.
This experience is suitable for beginners and no previous musical experience is required. By the end of the workshop, everyone will play together in a collective drumming session, experiencing the energy, connection, and rich heritage of Afro-Brazilian rhythms in the heart of Rio de Janeiro's vibrant Lapa district.
