Overview

Discover Zanzibar the way locals know it. Wander through a working spice farm where the guide hands you
fresh cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg to smell and taste straight from the plants, then watch a barefoot climber
scale a coconut palm and share its water with you. After a lunch cooked with the farm's own spices, step into
the winding streets of Stone Town, where the professional guide reveals its markets, landmarks, and hidden
corners, along with the stories of the spice and slave trades that shaped this coast

What to expect

  1. Jambo Spice Farm
    3h
The farm covers 3 to 4 hectares, split into small plots. Each plot grows something different: cloves,
cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, turmeric, lemongrass, and coffee. Fruit trees grow between them, too,
like mango, banana, and orange. Our guide walks you plot to plot. He picks a leaf or seed, you smell it, and
you try to guess what it is before he tells you. Next comes a crowd favorite. A man known as the butterfly
man climbs a tall coconut palm while singing Hakuna Matata, then drops young coconuts down for
everyone to drink. Lunch follows, cooked with farm spices: pilau, spinach, cooked banana, fried chicken,
sauce, and kachumbari. Before we leave, the farm shop is open if you want to buy packets of spices to take
    home.
  2. Darajani Bazaar
    18m
Every town has one market that matters, and in Stone Town it's this one. People call it different things:
Darajani, the spice market, or the local market. Traders arrive early with the day's catch, fresh produce, and
sacks of spices. It's loud, colorful, and completely real. Our guide leads you through and points out things
    you'd otherwise walk past.
  3. Christ Church Cathedral
    18m · Admission ticket included
The church here was built where the slave market once stood. Zanzibar was a major trading power in East
Africa for a long time, and human beings were part of that trade. Captives from the mainland arrived by
boat, chained, and were sold on this ground. The journey alone killed many of them. In 1873, the Sultan shut
the market down under pressure from abolitionists, and Zanzibar's role in the trade made it central to ending
slavery far beyond Africa. Our guide brings you into the underground holding chambers and to the memorial
outside. It's a heavy stop, but one you shouldn't miss.
  4. Freddie Mercury Museum
    18m · Admission ticket included
Before the world knew him as Freddie Mercury, he was Farrokh Bulsara, a boy from Stone Town. His
family left for England around 1963. The museum covers his whole life: the family's Zoroastrian faith,
growing up on the island, boarding school in Panchgani, India, and the road that made him one of the
biggest voices in music history. Queen fans, this one's for you.
  5. The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe)
    15m
Nothing in Stone Town is older than this fort. The Omanis raised it in the late 1600s, on ground where a
Portuguese church once stood, to guard the island against attack. Its fighting days are long over. Inside,
you'll find craft stalls, local artwork, and an open-air amphitheater that hosts festivals through the year. If
you're after handmade souvenirs, buy them here.
