Experience an authentic kumihimo braiding workshop at Kujokan, a historic hall in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum, led by Domyo, a long-established kumihimo studio founded in 1652. Domyo is renowned in traditional Japanese dress as Japan's foremost maker of obi-jime sash cords. Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese craft in which silk threads are braided together using a wooden stand called a marudai.
Kumihimo drew worldwide attention after it appeared in the hit animated film Your Name (2016), and it now has fans around the globe (this workshop is an independent Domyo experience and is not affiliated with the film). If the movie sparked your interest in kumihimo, this is a wonderful way to try it for yourself. You'll choose your own silk threads and use a marudai to braid an original strap or bracelet to take home.
An experienced Domyo instructor will guide you through the traditional Nara-gumi technique, so first-timers can join with confidence. Your finished piece, a strap or a bracelet, is yours to keep as a lasting memory of your trip.
Enter Tokyo National Museum through the Main Gate and continue into the garden to Kujokan. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your session begins and look for your Domyo instructor at the entrance to Kujokan.
