A Craft Made World-Famous by the Film Your Name
Kumihimo became world-famous after appearing in Your Name (2016) (this workshop is an independent Domyo program, not affiliated with the film). It's a rare chance to experience the technique and culture that has captivated fans worldwide.

A Special Venue: Kujokan, Tokyo National Museum
Held at Kujokan, a historic building on the museum grounds not normally open to the public — it will be specially opened just for this workshop. Offered on just five days (October 28 and 29, November 17, and December 17 and 18, 2026), this is a rare chance to spend a quiet hour immersed in traditional Japanese culture within this historic space.

What to expect

Experience an authentic kumihimo braiding workshop at Kujokan, a historic hall in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum, led by Domyo, a long-established kumihimo studio founded in 1652. Domyo is renowned in traditional Japanese dress as Japan's foremost maker of obi-jime sash cords. Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese craft in which silk threads are braided together using a wooden stand called a marudai.

Kumihimo drew worldwide attention after it appeared in the hit animated film Your Name (2016), and it now has fans around the globe (this workshop is an independent Domyo experience and is not affiliated with the film). If the movie sparked your interest in kumihimo, this is a wonderful way to try it for yourself. You'll choose your own silk threads and use a marudai to braid an original strap or bracelet to take home.

An experienced Domyo instructor will guide you through the traditional Nara-gumi technique, so first-timers can join with confidence. Your finished piece, a strap or a bracelet, is yours to keep as a lasting memory of your trip.
