Overview

This is a spectacular five day climb to the peak as you cross the lowland forests alpine tundra with giant groundsels and lobelias. A number of small glaciers are to be found around the summit. This climb will take you up the Sirimon Route to the hiker's summit of Lenana Pt (4985m) and down via the Chogoria route so that you can enjoy a complete traverse of the mountain to to old Moses. The following days hike up to Shipton Camp takes us past the peaks of Teleki and Sendeyo (3990m) which are actually ancient volcanic vents of the main peak. The following day we will start early on day four to make the final steep climb to the peak which offers views of Mount Kilimanjaro to the south and Mt. Elgon to the northwest. The summit day is about 10 hours of hiking in total as we will head back down the mountain to Chogoria Bandas for the night. The final day we will walk through the forest and back to the Chogoria gate to meet your driver to transport you back to Nairobi.

What to expect

Day 1: Nairobi-Transfer to Mt Kenya

Leave Nairobi at 8.00 am to Nanyuki town for lunch, taking about 4 hours. After lunch, proceed to Sirimon Gate taking about 1 hr at an altitude of 2650m. (Sirimon, Judmier Camp, Old Moses Camp 3-4 Hrs, 9Km, 860m Ascent). From the gate follow the road as it winds uphill though the forest which becomes heathland after about 3 hrs. After the 3½ hours hike from the gate, the road veers right to Judmaier/Old Moses Camp 9 km for dinner and overnight ( 3300m.).

Day 2: Mount Kenya

After breakfast, follow the track uphill, forking right at the junction. (6-7Hrs, 14Km, 900M Ascent). After one hour from Old Moses Camp, the track crosses the Ontulili River. (Judmier Camp/Shipton Camp 6-7Hrs, 14KM, 900M Ascent). Go right contouring through the Moorland and crossing Likii North river and continue uphill to the ridge facing the Mackinders Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the main peaks. Proceed up in the valley to Shipton Camp (14 km) for dinner and overnight at 4200m.

Day 3: Shipton's Hut

Spend the day for acclimatizing in the surroundings. Walk to Hauseberg col 4600m. Around Kami Hut and if you have extra energy to proceed, you will walk down to Hauseberg Lakes (Hauseberg Tarn and Nanyuki Tarn). Walk back to Shipton for lunch, dinner, and overnight.

Leave Shipton at 3 am and ascend up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff clearing
visible part towards lower Harris Tarns arriving Mount Kenya point Lenana 4,985m. (Shiptons/Point Lenana/Meru Mt Kenya Bandas/Chogoria Gate 11-12Hr, 26KMm 785m Ascent/Chogoria Gate) for sunrise and then start the descent to Mintos hut 4,200m (4kms) for breakfast and a panoramic view of the Gorge’s valley ( 2hrs.) and then continue down for 19km, 5-6hrs to Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas, 2,950m, for dinner and overnight.
