   Kotoku-in Temple is one of Kamakura’s most famous Buddhist temples and the home of the Great Buddha, a monumental bronze statue that has become a symbol of the city. The temple belongs to the Jodo sect of Buddhism, and the Great Buddha dates back to the 13th century, when Kamakura was the political center of Japan.
   
   The Great Buddha stands approximately 11.3 meters tall and weighs around 121 tons. Originally housed inside a large wooden hall, the statue has stood outdoors since the hall was destroyed by natural disasters centuries ago. Visitors can admire its impressive craftsmanship and, when available, enter the interior of the statue.
   
   The peaceful temple grounds offer a chance to experience one of Japan’s most important Buddhist landmarks. 2. Hasedera Temple

   Hasedera is one of Kamakura’s most beautiful Buddhist temples, known for its peaceful gardens, hillside setting, and spectacular views over the city and Sagami Bay. The temple is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy, and is especially famous for its enormous wooden statue of the Eleven-Headed Kannon.
   
   Founded in the 8th century, Hasedera has a long history as an important center of Kannon worship. The temple grounds stretch up the hillside and feature traditional buildings, ponds, gardens, and small paths surrounded by seasonal flowers and greenery.
   
   Take time to explore the temple at a relaxed pace, enjoy the views from the hillside, and discover details throughout the grounds. Hasedera is particularly beautiful during hydrangea season, when thousands of flowers cover the hillside, but its gardens and atmosphere make it a worthwhile visit throughout the year.
3. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

   Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura’s most important Shinto shrine and one of the city’s most significant historical landmarks. Founded in 1063 and relocated to its present location in 1180 by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate, the shrine has been closely connected with the history of samurai culture and Kamakura for centuries.
   
   A long approach leads from the city center toward the shrine, passing through large torii gates and along a wide avenue. Inside the grounds, visitors can explore the main shrine, traditional buildings, ponds, gardens, and peaceful wooded areas while experiencing the atmosphere of one of Japan’s most important Shinto sites.
   
   Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is an excellent place to learn about Kamakura’s samurai heritage while enjoying traditional Japanese architecture and scenery. The shrine is also particularly atmospheric during seasonal festivals and when its gardens are in bloom.
4. Hokoku-ji Temple Bamboo Grove

Founded in 1334, the temple belongs to the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism and has a long connection with the Ashikaga family, one of the influential samurai families of medieval Japan.
   
   The temple’s main attraction is its beautiful bamboo garden, where around 2,000 tall bamboo stalks create a tranquil green corridor. A narrow path leads through the grove to a traditional tea house, where visitors can enjoy matcha while surrounded by the serene bamboo forest.
   
   Hokoku-ji offers a peaceful contrast to Kamakura’s busier attractions and is an ideal stop for travelers looking to experience Japanese Zen culture, traditional scenery, and a quieter side of the city.
5. Kamakura Komachidori

   Along the pedestrian-friendly street, you can browse local specialty food stalls, restaurants, shops, cafés, and souvenir stores. Try popular Japanese foods and sweets, sample local specialties, or pick up souvenirs as you explore the heart of Kamakura.
   
   Komachi-dori is a great place to discover Kamakura’s local flavors and enjoy a casual food experience while exploring the city.
6. Kencho-ji Temple

   (Optional) Kencho-ji is one of Kamakura’s most important Zen temples and the head temple of the Kencho-ji school of the Rinzai tradition. Founded in 1253 by Hojo Tokiyori, the fifth regent of the Kamakura shogunate, it played an important role in the development of Zen Buddhism and samurai culture in medieval Japan.
   
   The temple complex stretches into the wooded hills and features impressive traditional buildings, peaceful gardens, and historic statues. Visitors can walk through the temple grounds and experience the calm atmosphere of one of Kamakura’s oldest and most influential Zen temples.
   
   Kencho-ji is an excellent stop for travelers interested in Japanese history, Zen Buddhism, traditional architecture, and peaceful temple scenery.

Pickup and drop-off are available from locations within central Tokyo (23 wards), Yokohama, and Kawasaki.
This includes hotels, train stations, and any other location accessible by car.
Yokohama Port pickup for cruise passengers is also available.
