What to expect

Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine
50m

Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine & Oyunohara Big Torii (50 mins)
The spiritual heart of the ancient pilgrimage route. Viator travelers will love the rustic, ancient wooden architecture built without a single nail, blending perfectly into the cedar forest. It's the ultimate spot to learn about the mythical three-legged crow (Yatagarasu). We will also visit Oyunohara to stand beneath the jaw-dropping Big Torii Gate—the largest Shinto gateway in the world, towering over 33 meters high amidst peaceful rice fields. A truly majestic and spiritual sight perfect for photography.
Kumano Nachi Taisha
1h 30m

Kumano Nachi Taisha (1 hour 30 mins)
A spectacular Shinto Grand Shrine perched high in the misty mountains. Perfect for cultural seekers, this site beautifully showcases "Shinbutsu-shugo"—the unique harmony where Shinto gods and Buddhist deities are worshiped together. The vibrant vermilion pavilions offer stunning panoramic mountain views.
Daimonzaka
15m

Daimonzaka (15 mins)
The most iconic, photogenic segment of the Kumano Kodo trail. Walk on the ancient, moss-covered cobblestone steps shaded by towering 800-year-old cedar trees. This brief but deeply atmospheric walk lets you experience the true mystical energy felt by centuries of pilgrims.
Seiganto-ji Temple
15m

Seiganto-ji Temple (15 mins)
The oldest wooden structure in the entire region. This is where you capture Japan’s absolute #1 postcard photograph: the brilliant red 3-story Buddhist pagoda standing in perfect contrast against the roaring backdrop of the giant Nachi Waterfall. A dream spot for photography enthusiasts.
20m

Nachi Waterfall (20 mins)
Stand in awe before Japan’s tallest single-drop waterfall, cascading down a dramatic 133-meter cliff. Western travelers will appreciate the raw nature worship here, as the waterfall itself is revered as a living Shinto deity (Hiro-jinja). Feel the refreshing sacred mist and primal power of nature.
Kumano Hayatama Taisha
20m

Kumano Hayatama Taisha (20 mins)
The vibrant seaside Grand Shrine of the Kumano trio, symbolizing the purification of the past. Famous for its brilliant orange gates and the sacred 800-year-old Nagi tree. It provides a beautiful, bright visual contrast to the deeper forest shrines visited earlier.
Totsukawa Onsen Iorinoyu
30m

Totsukawa Onsen Iorinoyu (30 mins)
After hours of walking and riding, relax your feet in an authentic, natural hot spring footbath (Ashiyu) tucked deep within a remote alpine river gorge. This local, rustic experience is completely missed by standard commercial tour buses.
