What to expect

Old Venetian Harbor of Heraklion
Pass by

The Old Venetian Port of Heraklion stands as a testament to Crete’s rich maritime history and its strategic importance during the Venetian rule from the 13th to the 17th century. Built to serve as a vital hub for trade and defense, the port was once lined with shipyards and warehouses that supported Venetian naval power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its well-preserved architecture, stone piers, and arched structures reflect the engineering skill and ambition of the time. Walking along the harbor today, you can still feel the echoes of a vibrant past shaped by merchants, sailors, and centuries of cultural exchange.
Castello del Molo (Koules)
Pass by

Rising proudly at the entrance of Heraklion’s Old Venetian Port, the Koule Fortress—also known as the Rocca al Mare—has stood watch over the harbor for centuries. Built by the Venetians in the early 16th century, this formidable structure was designed to protect the city and its vital maritime routes from pirate raids and enemy fleets. With its thick stone walls, battlements, and storied past, the fortress served not only as a military stronghold but also as a symbol of Venetian power in the Eastern Mediterranean. Today, its enduring presence tells the tale of Heraklion’s strategic importance and the turbulent history of Crete’s coastal defenses.
