Overview

Discover Stralsund, the Hanseatic port that once built the tallest building on Earth, through a self-guided walking tour you control entirely from your own smartphone. Follow eight handpicked stops - from the modern Ozeaneum's Baltic aquariums to the soaring red-brick towers of St. Mary's Church, once the tallest structure in the world - while an audio guide narrates the stories behind each landmark. Along the way, quizzes turn sightseeing into a game, testing what you've just learned about Stralsund's merchant history, its cannon sheds turned harbor halls, and the guarded gates that once protected its craftsmen's quarter. There's no app to download and no physical guide to keep up with: everything runs right from your phone, so you can pause for a coffee, backtrack for a photo, or linger at your favorite square without losing your place. Move at your own pace and explore this UNESCO World Heritage old town the way it deserves to be explored, one story at a time.

What to expect

  1. Ozeaneum
    Pass by
Take in the striking modern architecture of the Ozeaneum, a harborfront aquarium dedicated to Baltic and North Sea marine life. Four sleek steel volumes by Behnisch Architekten wrap around a historic 19th-century port warehouse, with a rooftop terrace home to a colony of Humboldt penguins.
  2. Pass by
Take in the historic brick facade of Kron-Lastadie, a half-timbered shed from 1864 that tracks the waterfront's shift from Swedish and Prussian military depot to a civilian harbor terrace. The name recalls its days as a loading wharf under the Swedish Crown.
  3. Rathaus Stralsund
    Pass by
Admire the elaborate Gothic show-facade of the Stralsund Rathaus on the Alter Markt, its pierced brickwork rising well above the true roofline as a medieval display of civic wealth. Beneath the square lies one of the largest surviving medieval vaulted cellars in northern Europe.
  4. Wulflamhaus
    Pass by
Gaze up at the ornate stepped gable of the Wulflamhaus, a Gothic merchant's townhouse built around 1350 as a private rival to the Town Hall across the square. Its dark-glazed and red brickwork remains one of Stralsund's finest examples of secular Gothic design.
  5. St. Nicholas' Church, Stralsund
    Pass by
Admire the ancient brick exterior and twin towers of St. Nikolaikirche, Stralsund's oldest parish church, built around 1234 as both a place of worship and the city's administrative and diplomatic hub. A covered arcade once linked it directly to the town hall.
  6. Kuetertor
    Pass by
Walk past the Kütertor, a well-preserved 15th-century brick gate tower that once guarded the city's fortified boundary. Named after the butchers who worked nearby, it's one of only two of Stralsund's original ten gates still standing.
  7. Deutsches Meeresmuseum
    Pass by
Admire the impressive brick Gothic facade of the Katharinenkloster on Mönchstraße, a 13th-century Dominican monastery whose former church now houses an aquarium and marine centre beneath its soaring medieval vaults.
  8. St. Marienkirche
    Pass by
Gaze up at the towering red-brick architecture of St. Mary's Church, whose spire made it the tallest building in the world from 1549 to 1647. Its Baroque dome and 17th-century Stellwagen organ remain among Stralsund's most striking landmarks.
