Overview

Discover the Cinque Terre's breathtaking beauty with our self-guided audio tour app, allowing you to explore the five legendary villages of the Italian Riviera at your own pace. Begin in Riomaggiore where pastel houses tumble down cliffs to a tiny harbor where fishermen have launched their boats for centuries. Hike the ancient footpaths that connect the villages through terraced vineyards and Mediterranean scrubland, pausing at viewpoints where the turquoise sea sparkles beneath vertiginous cliffs. Wander through Manarola's waterfront, perhaps the most photographed scene in all of Italy, then climb to the hilltop cemetery whose setting rivals any sunset lookout. Discover Corniglia perched high on its promontory, the only village without direct sea access, where 382 brick steps reward climbers with the quietest of the five communities. Explore Vernazza's harbor, medieval tower, and the church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia whose striped facade anchors the most dramatic village setting.

What to expect

Monterosso al Mare
1h

The largest and most resort-like of the five villages spreads across two bays—the medieval old town huddled beneath its defensive tower and the newer Fegina beach district stretching along the only real sand beach in the Cinque Terre. The old town's baroque churches, pedestrian lanes, and excellent restaurants maintain traditional character while the beach offers sunbeds, swimming, and the seaside relaxation the other villages cannot provide. The Giant, a 14-meter statue of Neptune holding a seashell that once supported a dance floor, recalls the early 20th-century
Via dell'Amore
Pass by

The famous 'Lovers' Path' connecting Riomaggiore to Manarola has been closed for repairs since a 2012 landslide, though sections have gradually reopened and full restoration is promised. When accessible, this paved walkway offers the easiest and most romantic of Cinque Terre walks, its dramatic sea views and tunnel of love locks making it the trail everyone hopes to walk. Alternative paths exist but require significantly more effort; check current conditions before planning your route between villages.
Corniglia
1h

The only village without direct sea access sits 100 meters above the water on a promontory surrounded by vineyards, its 382 brick steps (or long stairway bus) discouraging casual visitors and preserving a quieter atmosphere than its neighbors. The village's single main street ends at a panoramic terrace, the Belvedere di Santa Maria, while the narrow lanes reveal medieval architecture largely unchanged since the original inhabitants fortified themselves against Saracen raids. Corniglia's relative tranquility and authentic local character reward those willing to make the climb, with excellent restaurants and bars serving fewer tourists than the more accessible villages.
Vernazza
1h

Many consider Vernazza the most beautiful of the five villages, its natural harbor protected by a dramatic promontory crowned with a medieval watchtower and the striped Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia. The village suffered devastating flooding in 2011 but has been lovingly restored, its small piazza, excellent restaurants, and swimming from the harbor rocks returning to pre-disaster glory. The climb to the Doria Castle ruins rewards effort with 360-degree views that encompass all five villages on clear days, while the harbor's tiny beach provides the only sand between Riomaggiore and Monterosso.
Riomaggiore
1h

The southernmost and most accessible of the five villages cascades down a steep ravine in a riot of pastel-painted houses that seem to defy gravity as they cling to the rocky slopes above a tiny harbor. The village's single main street, Via Colombo, tunnels through the buildings from the train station to the waterfront, lined with restaurants, wine bars, and shops selling the limoncello and pesto that define local cuisine. The harbor's concrete swimming area and the dramatic stairs climbing to the castle provide the best views of Riomaggiore's improbable architecture, while sunset transforms the scene into the iconic image that draws millions to this coast.
Sentiero Azzurro
1h

The famous coastal path connecting all five villages offers the quintessential Cinque Terre experience, its 12 kilometers of trails winding through vineyards, along cliff edges, and past viewpoints that have inspired travelers since the Romantics discovered this coast. The full trail requires a Cinque Terre Card and varies in difficulty—Via dell'Amore (when open) is flat and paved while the section between Corniglia and Vernazza includes challenging switchbacks. Trail sections may close for maintenance or weather; check conditions daily and carry water, as the Mediterranean sun and steep climbs challenge even fit hikers.

The steep terraced vineyards that climb impossible slopes above each village represent centuries of backbreaking labor, their dry stone walls totaling over 7,000 kilometers—longer than the Great Wall of China. The Bosco, Albarola, and Vermentino grapes grown here produce crisp white wines and the rare Sciacchetrà dessert wine, made from grapes dried on mats to concentrate their sugars before pressing. Several wineries offer tastings, and understanding the human effort required to maintain these vineyards—where grapes must still be harvested by hand—adds appreciation for every glass poured.
