What to expect

Niagara Falls State Park
1h

Begin at America’s oldest state park, established in 1885 after Frederick Law Olmsted championed the Free Niagara movement to preserve the falls from commercial exploitation. Prospect Point offers your first breathtaking view of all three waterfalls, with the American Falls directly before you and the Horseshoe Falls curving in the distance. The Observation Tower descends to the river level and serves as the departure point for the Maid of the Mist, while interpretive displays explain the twelve-thousand-year geological story of these falls.
Cave of the Winds
Pass by

Descend by elevator to the base of Bridal Veil Falls for the park’s most immersive experience. Wooden walkways lead to the Hurricane Deck where you stand just twenty feet from the thundering cascade, drenched in spray despite your yellow poncho. The sensory power of millions of gallons crashing beside you creates a primal connection to the falls that no overlook can match. The experience operates seasonally and the walkways are rebuilt each spring after winter ice destroys them.
1h

Cross to Goat Island, the landmass that divides American Falls from Horseshoe Falls, and walk the scenic 1.9-mile loop through old-growth forest to Terrapin Point. This dramatic overlook places you at the very brink of Horseshoe Falls where the green water curves and plunges one hundred eighty-eight feet into the gorge below. The Three Sisters Islands extend further into the rapids, offering peaceful spots surrounded by rushing water and remarkable views upstream.
Niagara Gorge Trail
1h

The seven-mile gorge trail system offers spectacular hiking along the rim of the Niagara Gorge, passing through hardwood forest with continuous views of the turquoise river four hundred feet below. Devil’s Hole State Park features a dramatic stone staircase descending to river level where the rapids are at their most violent, and Whirlpool State Park overlooks the massive natural whirlpool where the river makes a sharp ninety-degree turn.
Rainbow Bridge
Pass by

The Rainbow Bridge connects the United States and Canada across the Niagara Gorge, offering pedestrian access to the Canadian side for just one dollar. The bridge provides unique eye-level views of both the American and Horseshoe Falls and is particularly spectacular during the nightly illumination when hundreds of LED lights paint the falls in shifting colours.
1h

Niagara Falls was one of the most important crossing points on the Underground Railroad, where an estimated forty thousand freedom seekers made the dangerous journey to Canada and liberty. The Heritage Center tells their stories through immersive exhibits, including the role of African American waiters at the Cataract House hotel who secretly helped people escape, and Harriet Tubman’s use of the Suspension Bridge to guide freedom seekers across the border to safety.
Niagara Power Vista Visitors Center
1h

The New York Power Authority’s free interactive museum explains how Niagara Falls generates enough electricity to power millions of homes. Over fifty hands-on exhibits explore hydroelectric engineering, and the Power Player Experience takes visitors on a virtual ride through the generation process. An observation deck offers gorge views, and the story of Nikola Tesla’s pioneering 1895 power plant that launched the age of alternating current electricity is told in vivid detail.
Old Fort Niagara
Pass by

Ten miles north at the mouth of the Niagara River stands one of America’s most significant military fortifications, occupied continuously by the French, British, and Americans since 1726. The star-shaped fortress overlooking Lake Ontario features living history demonstrations, original eighteenth-century buildings, and panoramic views where the Niagara River meets the Great Lake. The fort’s strategic importance during the War of 1812 makes it essential for understanding the region’s military heritage.
1h

Called the most historic square mile in America by President Jimmy Carter, the village of Lewiston along the lower Niagara River features the Freedom Crossing Monument commemorating Underground Railroad history, the Tuscarora Heroes Monument, and Artpark’s one hundred fifty acres of arts venue and nature trails overlooking the gorge. The charming main street offers independent shops, restaurants, and a Saturday artisan farmers market running June through October.
