Overview
Arrive in Semera, the gateway to the Danakil region, and begin your journey into one of the most extreme landscapes on Earth. Continue driving toward Hamedela, passing through vast arid desert scenery and traditional Afar villages along the way. Upon arrival, meet your guide for a safety briefing and introduction to the expedition before settling in for an overnight stay in a simple camp or local accommodation.

What to expect
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Semera – Hamedela
Danakil Depression
Pass by
Depart from Addis Ababa in the morning and travel to Semera, the gateway to the Danakil region. Continue to Hamedela, passing through arid landscapes and traditional Afar villages. Upon arrival, receive a safety briefing and introduction to the expedition.

Day 2: Hamedela – Dallol – Salt Flats – Erta Ale Base Camp

Pass by
After breakfast, explore the colorful geothermal landscapes of Dallol, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. Visit the salt flats of Lake Assale and observe traditional salt mining activities carried out by the Afar people. In the afternoon, drive to Erta Ale base camp.

Day 3: Erta Ale Volcano
Erta Ale
Pass by
Travel to the foot of Erta Ale Volcano and begin the trek with local guides and camels carrying supplies. Reach the crater rim to witness the spectacular active lava lake and enjoy panoramic views of the volcanic landscape. Return to camp for the night.

Day 4: Erta Ale – Afdera – Semera
Pass by
Descend from the volcano after sunrise and drive through the desert landscapes to Afdera. Enjoy views of Lake Afdera and local salt production sites before continuing to Semera for an overnight stay.

Day 5: Semera – Addis Ababa City Tour

Pass by
After breakfast, return to Addis Ababa. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a guided city highlights tour featuring selected landmarks, cultural sites, and local markets. Transfer to your hotel or the airport at the end of the tour.
