Overview

You will enjoy stunning ocean views as we ride along historic Boothbay byways that traverse the length of historic Spruce Point, where the Wawenock once fished and early colonials settled. We’ll see the historic Spruce Point Inn, host to the Kennedys and Ernest Hemingway and named as one of the Northeast’s top 25 resorts by Conde Nast Traveler. Along the way, we’ll see one of the last large coastal lodges built prior to the Great Depression and take in some of the most beautiful coastline water views in Midcoast Maine before strolling along America’s longest wooden footbridge. Your entertaining guide has collected some intriguing historical tales to share that you didn’t learn about in history class.

What to expect

  1. 30m
Bike fitting, instruction, and parking lot practice ride.
  2. 10m
Hear stories about Maine’s mysterious Red Paint People who prospered here for thousands of years and disappeared without a trace.
  3. 5m
Visit to this historic girls’ camp-turned resort with views of Linekin Bay and Cabbage Island, home of Maine’s favorite Cabbage Island Clambake.
  4. 15m
What do Queen Elizabeth I, a ring, and Outer Heron Island have in common? Would you believe the claim on a $1 billion-dollar English estate?
  5. 10m
See the 1920s Sprucewold Lodge once billed as the “World’s Largest Log Cabin” and a fine example of an Adirondack-style hotel. Local Wawenock leader Samoset became the first Indigenous person to contact the Europeans and sets an example for us today.

As the earliest European settlement, America was born on Damariscove Island. Home to a bird sanctuary and a headless ghost and his dog, the first North American pirate buried treasure in its bottomless pond.
