The trail can be muddy and humid, but the gradual ascent makes this an enjoyable introduction to the climb. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.

    Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

    Habitat: Moorland

Leave the rainforest behind and ascend into the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you cross rocky ridges with expansive views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. Arrival at Shira Camp is usually early afternoon, allowing time to rest and acclimatize.
