Overview

A fully private day from Tokyo to the quiet north side of Mount Fuji: your own fluent English-speaking guide, your own car. Your guide collects you at your hotel, walks every stop with you and drives you back. No driver waiting in the car while you go in alone.

The day: Oshino Hakkai's spring-fed ponds, early; the cedar avenue of Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine; Chureito Pagoda with Fuji behind it (about 400 steps); lunch, with hoto noodles to try; the thatched village of Saiko Iyashi no Sato; the Narusawa lava caves. Then an optional hot spring, back in Tokyo around 18:30. On request: the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, or the Fuji 5th Station when the road is open.

Onsen: our usual one is Fuji Chobo no Yu Yurari. Its public baths do not accept tattoos; small covered tattoos are fine at another bath nearby; for any tattoos we book a private bath at extra cost, tell us early.

Paid on the day: lunch, small entry fees, museum, onsen. Pickup anywhere in Tokyo's 23 wards.

What to expect

  1. Mt. Fuji 5th Station
    10m · Admission ticket included
Optional. On request, when the Subaru Line road is open (it closes from early December to spring): the 5th Station at 2,305 m on the slopes of Mount Fuji. We mostly skip it for the quieter stops below; tell us when you book if you want it.
  2. Oshino Hakkai
40m · Admission ticket not included
Eight clear ponds fed by Fuji snowmelt in a small village, visited early, before the coaches arrive. A small entry fee applies at some of the spring areas, paid on the day.
  3. Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja Shrine
    30m
A quiet working shrine under giant cedars: the stone lanterns, the great wooden torii and the gate where pilgrims traditionally began the climb of Mount Fuji. Your guide walks it with you.
  4. Chureito Pagoda
    40m
The five-storey pagoda above Fujiyoshida with Mount Fuji behind it, reached by about 400 steps. If stairs are hard, tell us and your guide adapts the day.
  5. Itchiku Kubota Art Museum
10m · Admission ticket not included
Optional. The Itchiku Kubota Art Museum: kimono art and quiet gardens in the forest by Lake Kawaguchi. Not always open, so tell us when you book and we check the date. Entry paid on the day.
  6. Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba
45m · Admission ticket not included
A village of thatched houses by Lake Saiko, with craft workshops and Mount Fuji above the roofs on a clear day. Lunch before or after, with hoto, the thick miso noodle stew of the region, to try. Small entry fee paid on the day.
  7. Narusawa Ice Cave
40m · Admission ticket not included
Narusawa Ice Cave and Fuji Wind Cave: lava tubes under the Aokigahara forest, close to 0 °C inside. Bring a layer; helmets provided; uneven floor and some ducking. Entry paid on the day.
  8. Fuji Chobo-no-yu Yurari Onsen
10m · Admission ticket not included
Optional. Our usual hot spring, with open-air baths facing Mount Fuji. Its public baths do not accept tattoos; small covered tattoos are fine at another bath nearby; for any tattoos we book a private bath at extra cost, so tell us as early as possible. Bathing is without swimwear; towels can be rented. Entry paid on the day.
