Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of the Kumano Sanzan grand shrines, sits halfway up Mount Nachi and originated from ancient nature worship dedicated to Nachi Falls. At the top of 467 stone steps stands a vibrant, vermilion-lacquered worship hall, behind which six sacred main hall buildings reside in a solemn atmosphere. Within the grounds stands a sacred 850-year-old giant camphor tree, where visitors can experience Tainai Kuguri (walking through the hollow trunk), a ritual symbolizing spiritual rebirth.
  5. Nachi Mitaki Falls

Boasting the tallest single uninterrupted drop in the country, Nachi Falls is recognized as one of Japan's top three waterfalls. Upstream from Nachi Falls lie numerous waterfalls known as the "Nachi 48 Falls," which served as training grounds for Shugendo ascetics, with Nachi Falls itself being revered as the "First Waterfall" (Ichi-no-Taki). Watching the water plummet 133 meters down the sheer, vertical rock face is a truly breathtaking sight.

Registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." Stepping onto the shrine grounds, you will feel the breath of nature and the profound weight of history alongside the serene flow of time. The Treasure Hall houses valuable historical artifacts, including a national Important Cultural Property, the "Tetsu-yugama" (iron cauldron).
