Takachiho Gorge is one of Kyushu’s most stunning natural attractions, formed by ancient volcanic activity and shaped over time by the flowing Gokase River. The gorge is famous for its dramatic basalt cliffs, emerald-green waters, and the beautiful Manai Falls cascading into the river below. Visitors can enjoy a scenic wooden boat ride through the narrow canyon, rowing beneath towering rock walls and gentle waterfalls for a peaceful and unforgettable experience. A walking trail along the upper edge offers panoramic views, especially beautiful during autumn when the leaves turn vibrant red and orange. Rich in Japanese mythology and natural beauty, Takachiho Gorge is a perfect blend of adventure, serenity, and cultural charm.
if you want to ride a boat on the river, that does cost extra — boat rentals are typically about ¥4,100–¥5,100 per boat for a 30-minute ride (prices vary by season and demand). The walking trail remains free even if you choose not to take a boat.

Mount Naka-dake is the most active crater of the Mount Aso volcanic group and one of the few places in Japan where visitors can get close to an active volcano. Located within the vast Aso Caldera, Naka-dake features a dramatic crater with a striking emerald-green acidic lake at its center, often surrounded by steaming vents and volcanic smoke that highlight the raw power of nature. Depending on volcanic activity levels, visitors may walk near the crater rim to witness the rugged landscape and feel the energy of this dynamic geological site. When access is restricted for safety reasons, observation points and nearby viewpoints still offer impressive panoramic views of the crater and the surrounding volcanic terrain.
