Considered to be the 8th Wonder of the World, the Terracotta Warriors were buried to protect China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang in his afterlife more than 2000 years ago. While digging a well in 1974, local farmers stumbled upon broken pieces of terracotta. After a year of investigation and excavation, an estimated of 8000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses were uncovered in three pits. Other terracotta non-military figures were found in other pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians. The Terracotta Army is one of the most significant archaeological excavations of the 20th century in the world. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
