Start at the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with your entrance ticket included in the tour price.
The walk leads deep underground into one of Europe’s largest cave chambers and across a narrow bridge 45 metres above the rushing Reka river. Expect about two hours on foot with plenty of steps, at around 12°C all year, so bring a jacket.

Then on to Predjama Castle, the world’s largest cave castle, set halfway up a 123-metre cliff. Hear how the rebel knight Erazem defied an emperor’s army here, and the hidden passage that kept him going.

    Descend into the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site with one of the largest underground canyons on earth. The guided route leads first through the Silent Cave, past the Giant, a 15-metre stalagmite, then into the Murmuring Cave, where the Reka river thunders through a gorge up to 146 metres high. Cross the Cerkvenik bridge 47 metres above the water, then emerge into daylight in a vast collapse doline. Allow about 2 hours, with plenty of steps and 12°C inside, so bring a jacket. Photography is not allowed in the cave.

    Wedged into a 123-metre cliff face, Predjama is the world's largest cave castle and one of Europe's most startling sights — a medieval fortress that looks like the rock simply grew around it. Inside, the story gets better: 15th-century knight Erazem defied the Holy Roman Emperor's siege for over a year, smuggling in supplies through a secret tunnel carved into the cave system behind the castle. How it all ended is a tale best heard on the spot. Wander the chambers, find the hidden passages, and let the legend unfold around you.
