Overview
✨ Two countries, one day: Venetian Piran and Habsburg Trieste, less than an hour apart and worlds away from each other. ✨
Start in Piran, its pastel houses packed onto a narrow peninsula in the Adriatic. Wander the Venetian lanes to Tartini Square and up to St. George’s Church, whose bell tower is modelled on St. Mark’s in Venice.
Then cross into Italy. Trieste was the Habsburg Empire’s great port, and it shows: grand palaces, historic cafés where James Joyce once lingered, and Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, Europe’s largest square facing the sea. Enjoy free time to stroll, shop, or order a coffee, and find out why doing it here takes its own vocabulary.
For an extra stop, add Miramare Castle, gleaming white on a rocky point above the sea and surrounded by a lush park. It was built for a Habsburg archduke whose story ended very far from here.
