Originally established as a trading post for gold, it later became one of the most significant sites in the transatlantic slave trade. Thousands of enslaved Africans were confined in its dark, overcrowded dungeons before being forced through the infamous “Door of No Return” and shipped across the Atlantic. The castle later fell under Dutch and British control, continuing its role in colonial exploitation.
