It was built by the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1631 to 1653.

The fort contains splendid palaces both in red sandstone and white marble such as :- The Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Khas Mahal, Nagina Masjid, Musamman Burj, Jahangir Palace, etc.
