Chapel of Bones
1h · Admission ticket included
When arriving to Evora we will begin our Tour from the Chapel of Bones. One of Évora's most iconic and thought-provoking attractions. Constructed in the 16th century by Franciscan monks, it is lined with the bones and skulls of approximately 5,000 people. This was a creative solution to cemetery overcrowding and a symbolic reminder of the transient nature of life. The haunting inscription at its entrance, “Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos” (“We bones that are here, await yours”), invites visitors to reflect on mortality. After the visit to the chapel, we will visit the museum on the 2nd floor and also a beautiful panoramic view over Evora city.

This remarkably well-preserved structure, dating back to the 1st century AD, reflects the city’s Roman heritage. Originally part of the Roman Forum, the temple is believed to have been dedicated to Emperor Augustus rather than Diana, despite its popular name.
