    The site consists of around 30 rock-cut caves, carved into the horseshoe-shaped cliffs of the Waghora River valley. Dating from approximately the 2nd century BCE to the 5th–6th century CE, the caves were developed as Buddhist monasteries, prayer halls and places of religious learning.

    Ajanta is particularly famous for its beautiful ancient paintings and sculptures, which depict scenes from the life of Buddha, Jataka stories, religious traditions and aspects of everyday life in ancient India.
