The Palazzo Vecchio — literally “Old Palace” — was originally called the Palazzo della Signoria, after the governing body of the Florentine Republic.
It was commissioned in 1299 by the Priori delle Arti (Priors of the Guilds), the most powerful magistrates of Florence, to symbolize the city's independence and civic pride.
