Overview

Less than an hour from Lisbon lies Sintra, home to the Pena Palace—conceived by King Ferdinand II, a great enthusiast of the Romantic movement. You can also explore the unique architecture of the eccentric Quinta da Regaleira. While strolling through the winding streets of the historic center, be sure to visit Piriquita to sample some traditional pastries. Thanks to its location between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Sintra boasts a unique microclimate.

On the way back to Lisbon, you will travel along the coast, visiting Cabo da Roca—the westernmost point in Europe—and the picturesque fishing village of Cascais. Sea bathing became popular in the second half of the 19th century; when King Luís I chose the Cascais fortress as his summer residence, the nobility transformed the fishing village into a seaside resort filled with palaces and stately mansions.
