West Thumb Geyser Basin
10m

Welcome to West Thumb Geyser Basin! This remarkable geothermal area sits along the shores of Yellowstone Lake, offering colorful hot springs, steaming geysers, and breathtaking lakeside views.
10m

See that colorful pool up ahead? That's Thumb Geyser! Its vibrant yellow, orange, and green shades come from heat-loving microorganisms that thrive in the warm water.
10m

Look at that deep blue pool! That's Abyss Pool, one of Yellowstone's deepest hot springs, plunging 53 feet below the surface! It even erupted like a geyser between 1987 and 1992.
10m

Despite its name, Black Pool is actually a stunning shade of blue! Once darkened by heat-loving bacteria, this 30-foot-deep spring changed color when its water temperature increased during the 1990s.
10m

See that unusual cone rising from Yellowstone Lake? That's Fishing Cone! Early explorers famously caught trout in the lake and dipped them directly into this boiling geyser to cook their dinner!
10m

Look along the shoreline for Lakeshore Geyser! This fascinating geothermal feature has two vents and once shot water as high as 50 feet into the air. Today, it continues to bubble and steam beside the lake.
Yellowstone Lake
10m

Take in the spectacular views of Yellowstone Lake! Covering approximately 136 square miles, this enormous mountain lake sits 7,732 feet above sea level and hides geothermal features beneath its waters.
