Overview

Grab a wand and join your robed guide on the original tour of Edinburgh designed especially for Potter fans.

This is a chance to experience the original and consistently highest-rated Harry Potter walking tour of Edinburgh with the most experienced guides in the city. Started in 2012, the Potter Trail have been doing these tours longer than anyone, and our friendly and professional guides are all trained actors and comedians. The unique small group setting means the guide can tailor the tour to your group, interests and questions.

You’ll discover the magical locations that inspired characters and scenes in the series, visit the places where JK Rowling wrote the books, and even learn a spell or two along the way...
- See where "Lord Voldemort" is buried
- Take a trip down the real life Diagon Alley
- Find out which house you would be in at Edinburgh's very own school of magic
- Learn who the world’s worst poet was, and which Hogwarts teacher is named after him
...and much, much more!

What's included

  • Guide
  • Please bring something that you can use as a wand. This can be anything roughly wand shaped!

What to expect

  1. Greyfriars
    45m
We begin our tour in the city's historic Greyfriars Kirkyard where JK Rowling spent a lot of time while writing the books. Here we'll see several names on gravestones that inspired characters in the series including William McGonagall and Thomas Riddell.

From here we will also see two potential inspirations for Hogwarts in the form of George Heriot's School and Edinburgh Castle.
  2. 10m
An area of the city named after Harry Potter? Surely not! See the place where she wrote much of the first book from here.
  3. National Museum of Scotland
    10m
Harry Potter connections to the Museum and surrounding area - and also learn about the Balmoral Hotel where JK Rowling finished the series.
  4. George IV Bridge
    10m
Next we come to the historic George IV bridge, including plenty of photo opportunities and a world-famous cafe known as the "Birthplace" of Harry Potter. We will explain why those inverted commas are very important...
  5. Victoria Street
    15m
One of Edinburgh's most iconic streets, considered to be the real life Diagon Alley. Here our tour ends with some more brilliant stories from your guide.
