Overview

Mikumi National Park is abouts the northern border of Africa’s biggest game reserve – the Selous – and is transected by the surfaced road between Dar es Salaam and Iringa. It is thus the most accessible part of a 75,000 square kilometre (47,000 square mile) tract of wilderness that stretches east almost as far as the Indian Ocean.
Size: 3,230 sq km (1,250 sq miles), the fourth-largest park in Tanzania, and part of a much larger ecosystem centred on the uniquely vast Selous Game Reserve.
Location: 283 km (175 miles) west of Dar es Salaam, north of Selous, and en route to Ruaha, Udzungwa and (for the intrepid) Katavi.
Lions survey their grassy kingdom – and the zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo herds that migrate across it from the flattened tops of termite mounds, or sometimes, during the rains, from perches high in the trees. Giraffes forage in the isolated acacia stands that fringe the Mkata River, islets of shade favoured also by Mikumi’s elephants.

What to expect

Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park
  1. Mikumi National Park
    8h
After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel or airport in Dar es Salaam and depart for the Mikumi National Park. You will arrive in time for lunch. After lunch you will take off on your first game drive in the park; home to elephant, lion, wild dog, zebra, hyena, buffalo, wildebeest, eland, hartebeest, crocodile, lizards of all kinds and other residents. The park also is resident to over 300 species of birds. Dinner and your overnight stay will be at the Lodge later in the evening.
Day 2: Mikumi To Dar es Salaam
  1. Mikumi National Park
    6h
After an early breakfast, you will leave the lodge for a sunrise game drive in the park. Mikumi’s vegetation includes woodland, swamp and grassland with two water holes, Mkata and Chamgore. Apart from the saddle-bill stork, hammer kop and malachite kingfisher, you will also find monitor lizards and the deadly python inhabiting the shallow water. In the afternoon you will leave to park and start your journey back to Dar es Salaam with a stop for lunch at Morogoro Town. After lunch, you will then proceed to the agreed Dar es Salaam drop off point. This is where your safari will end.
