Overview

Watching the sunset and waiting for the lights to turn on in a water town is a unique way to experience the Yangtze Delta’s water towns. Zhujiajiao, a suburban Shanghai gem and one of the top 5 water towns closest to downtown Shanghai, boasts a 1,700-year history and the elegant alias "Pearl Stream". It preserves the ecology and charm of a millennial ancient town while embodying "Contemporary Jiangnan"—the new style and lifestyle of Yangtze River south water towns in the 21st century. Here, 36 distinctive old bridges span gurgling streams, willow-fringed rivers wind through the town, and brick-and-wood courtyard houses exude an air of antiquity, leisure and tranquility. There are also numerous small shops selling local handicrafts. Take a boat ride first, then wander the alleys to taste local snacks, and stroll the stone bridges to savor the sunset and the gentle glow of nightfall.

What to expect

  1. Pass by
Shangdu Alley (also known as Shangduli) is a stylish cultural and commercial block in Zhujiajiao Water Town, Shanghai.
Designed by five well-known architects, it features sloped roofs, grey bricks, and combines old-style elements with glass and steel. The alleys are winding and not straight, making every turn a new view.
It’s full of creative shops, cafes, bookstores, boutique hotels, and art spaces. It’s a popular spot for visitors to experience a mix of ancient charm and modern fashion in Shanghai’s famous water town.
  2. Zhujiajiao Chenghuangmiao Temple
    Pass by
The Town God Temple (Chenghuangmiao) is a Daoist temple dedicated to Guanyin, the goddess of mercy. Authentic worship still goes on, but like most temples in tourist destinations, it's pretty exploited. It's located on the middle of Caohe Street, in front of the Qijin bridge.
  3. Fangsheng Bridge
    Pass by
The bridge was originally built in 1571 with funds collected by monk Xingchao (Chinese: 性潮) from Cimen Temple (Chinese: 慈门寺). In the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368–1911), local monks would hold a ceremony on the bridge, releasing live fish into the port. It had been on the list of "The Ten Views of Zhujiajiao". It was rebuilt in 1812, in the ruling of Jiaqing Emperor (1796–1820) of the Qing dynasty(1644–1911).
On November 17, 1987, it has been designated as a municipal level cultural heritage by the Shanghai Municipal Government.
  4. Zhujiajiao Ancient Town
    Pass by
Huimin Bridge (also called Lang Bridge) is a famous wooden covered bridge in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, Shanghai.
Location: It stands at the southern end of North Street, crossing the Market River. East connects to busy North Street; west leads to Caohe Street.
Features: It’s the only wooden bridge in the town, with wooden railings, tiled roofs, and upturned eaves. It shelters people from sun and rain, so it’s named “Huimin” (meaning benefiting the people).
History: First built in the Qing Dynasty; rebuilt in 1996.
View: Walking on it, you can see classic Jiangnan water town scenery—stone banks, white walls, black tiles, and local daily life by the river.
  5. Pass by
    Tai’an Bridge

"Tai’an Bridge, located in the northern Zhashan area of the 25th administrative district, commonly known as Hejia Bridge, was built by the local community in the 12th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming dynasty (1584).”

The Qing scholar Chen Jianglin also wrote a poem titled “Tai’an Bridge in Evening View”:

"The sun sets, summer heat retreats,

A faint moonlight fills the pond.

Songs drift from the market streets,

Fishermen’s flutes echo east of the creek.

Palm fans sway away the lingering warmth,

Short summer robes catch the cool breeze.

In this tranquil evening, I wander alone,

The ancient temple connects to the bridge."
  6. Pass by
Traditional entrance to the Handalong Sauce and Pickle Shop with large black calligraphy characters. Zhujiajiao, China - Jul 25 2019: Traditional entrance to Handalong Sauce and Pickle Shop features large black calligraphy characters on white walls and an ornate gold-lettered sign above red doorway
  7. Pass by
    Caogang River Boat Ride
