6 Days Kerala Tour Package With Houseboat Stay

Day 1: Historic Fort Kochi Walk & Sunset Chinese Fishing Nets

1. Fort Kochi
   1h 30m
Step directly into five centuries of layered maritime history as you explore the peaceful cobblestone avenues of Fort Kochi. Originally a modest fishing settlement, this strategic spit of land transformed into India's earliest European colonial outpost when the Portuguese established trade factories in 1500, later ceded to the Dutch East India Company and the British Crown. Stroll beneath the expansive canopies of centuries-old rain trees past restored pastel-hued Dutch merchants' villas, secluded courtyards, and open-air seaside cafes. As you wander along Princess Street and Burgher Street, your guide shares stories of how this tiny peninsula controlled the world’s maritime spice routes, forever altering global culinary and political history.
2. Chinese Fishing Nets
   45m
Line the Fort Kochi promenade to watch the rhythmic operation of the legendary Chinese Fishing Nets, known locally as Cheena Vala. Believed to have been introduced to the Malabar Coast in the 14th century by court emissaries of Kublai Khan, these enormous shore-operated lift nets remain an enduring living symbol of Kochi's maritime legacy. Observe the team of seasoned fishermen as they balance heavy granite counterweights on teak wood cantilevered beams, smoothly lowering the massive webbed nets into the harbor mouth before hoisting them back up with their catch. Golden hour brings striking silhouettes against the setting sun over the Arabian Sea, offering exceptional photography opportunities alongside the historic harbor wall.
3. St Francis Assisi Church Kattiparambu Kochi
   30m
Step inside the quiet sanctuary of St. Francis Church, recognized as the earliest European church built on the Indian subcontinent. Established in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscan friars under the patronage of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the structure transitioned through timber and stone rebuilds, passing through Dutch Reformed and British Anglican hands over successive colonial eras. Walk down the central nave beneath antique Dutch chandeliers and traditional ceiling punkhas (cloth fans) to view the historic burial site where legendary Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama was interred in 1524. While his remains were returned to Lisbon fourteen years later, the inscribed gravestone remains a profound monument to the age of maritime exploration.
4. Mattancherry Palace
   1h 30m · Admission ticket not included
Journey to Mattancherry to uncover the rich commercial and religious mosaic of Old Kochi. Step inside the Mattancherry Palace, constructed by the Portuguese in 1555 as a goodwill gift to the Raja of Cochin and subsequently renovated by the Dutch. The interior chambers preserve some of the country's finest Hindu temple murals, rendered in natural vegetal pigments illustrating the Ramayana epic alongside royal palanquins and ceremonial coronation costumes. Just outside, stroll down the narrow market lane of Jew Town toward the 16th-century Paradesi Synagogue. This heritage lane bustles with historic aromatic spice merchants, vintage curio emporiums, antique wooden ship carvings, and handicraft boutiques.

Day 2: Scenic Western Ghats Drive to Munnar via Cheeyappara & Valara Waterfalls

1. Cheeyappara Waterfalls
   30m
Pause along the scenic Kochi–Madurai mountain highway to take in Cheeyappara Falls, one of Kerala's most picturesque natural spectacles. The waterfall rushes down a dramatic staircase of seven distinct granite rock tiers before plunging beneath the roadway bridge into the lush forested ravine below. Step out along the roadside viewing platform to feel the cool mountain spray, take panoramic photographs, and watch endemic hill birds flitting through the surrounding forest canopies. Local stalls near the overlook offer an authentic slice of hill life, serving steaming cups of freshly brewed spiced cardamom tea alongside piping-hot Kerala banana fritters (pazham pori) and fresh seasonal tropical fruit.
2. Valara waterfalls
   30m
Located just a few kilometers past Cheeyappara, Valara Falls emerges as a powerful cascade crashing over a steep rock face surrounded by dense virgin jungle. Fed by the Deviyar River, the falls remain protected by unyielding forest terrain, preserving their wild, undisturbed mountain atmosphere. The observation viewpoint provides an open vista of the surrounding deep gorge, where giant bamboo thickets and wild trees drape over the falling torrents. As your driver pauses here, soak in the quiet grandeur of the Western Ghats wilderness, listen to the roaring water echoes reverberating through the valley, and capture dramatic long-range photographs of the hillside.
3. Karadipara View Point
   45m
As your drive climbs into Munnar's high-altitude tea-growing belt, stop at Karadipara View Point for sweeping panoramic views across the hills. Stand along the ridge line looking out over miles of deep green valleys, meandering mountain roads, and neatly trimmed tea bushes planted across steep mountain slopes. Learn how Scottish pioneers transformed these rugged mountain tracts into commercial tea estates in the late 19th century. Enjoy unhurried photo stops right beside the tea rows, where you can inspect the tender "two leaves and a bud" picked by local estate workers and enjoy the crisp mountain air that made Munnar south India's premier hill escape.
4. Munnar
   1h 30m
Conclude the afternoon with a relaxed stroll through the heart of Munnar town and its hillside marketplace. Unlike the quiet estates outside the town, the vibrant streets here buzz with activity, lined with traditional spice shops, tea stalls, and handicraft boutiques. Browse shelves filled with freshly harvested green cardamom pods, Tellicherry black peppercorns, cinnamon quills, cloves, and therapeutic eucalyptus oils distilled on surrounding estates. Sample artisanal homemade dark chocolates infused with ginger and nuts, chat with friendly local traders, and soak up the lively mountain culture before your driver transfers you back to your resort.

Examine century-old photographs, vintage artifacts, and colonial-era machinery including the 1905 rotorvane and the original Pelton wheel power generator. A live factory demonstration showcases the entire orthodox and CTC manufacturing sequence: withering, rolling, fermenting, drying, and grading. Complete your visit with an expert-led tea tasting session, learning to identify the subtle aromas, delicate flavors, and golden liquor notes that define genuine high-grown Ceylon-style leaves.
3. Mattupetty Dam
   1h
Drive eastward through dense tea hills toward the impressive Mattupetty Dam, a solid gravity concrete dam constructed under the Pallivasal Hydro-electric Project in the late 1940s. The dam impounds a serene mountain reservoir nestled between forested hills and tea plantations. Walk along the top of the dam wall to take in panoramic views of the water catchment area, where wild elephants occasionally emerge from the surrounding jungle to drink at the water’s edge. Travelers can opt for an exhilarating speedboat ride across the lake waters, offering refreshing mountain breezes and unique photo perspectives of the surrounding tea-clad ridges.
4. Echo Point
   45m
Conclude your day's journey at Echo Point, a picturesque spot where three mountain streams—Mudirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala—converge amidst forested lakeside slopes. Step down to the water’s edge and call out across the calm lake surface to hear your voice echo cleanly off the surrounding granite hillsides. The shoreline is shaded by native evergreen trees and fragrant eucalyptus canopies, creating an ideal setting for a relaxed stroll. Browse small roadside stalls run by local villagers offering sliced spiced pineapples, tender coconuts, homemade tea blends, and local wooden souvenirs before your scenic return transfer.

Day 4: Cardamom Hills, Spice Plantation & Cultural Evening

Wind along the mountain highway connecting Munnar and Thekkady, making a scenic pause at Lockhart Gap. Here, a natural break between cliff peaks reveals dramatic views across misty valleys carpeted in tea and native shola forests. As you continue toward the district of Idukki, the higher tea elevations gradually transition into dense, shaded groves of the Cardamom Hills. The route passes sleepy hill villages and roadside spice-drying yards, where local growers spread freshly picked green cardamom pods and tellicherry pepper berries under the sun. Enjoy stops to breathe in the fresh mountain air, capture sweeping photos of the Western Ghats range, and experience the slow rhythm of highland rural life.

Your guide explains traditional harvesting techniques, the organic cultivation cycle, and the centuries-old medicinal properties of each plant in classical Ayurveda. Conclude your walk at the estate dispensary to pick up vacuum-sealed farm-fresh spices and artisanal herbal remedies.
3. Main Bazaar Munnar
   1h
Spend a leisurely afternoon hour exploring the vibrant bazaar town of Kumily, sitting directly on the border dividing Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The bustling streets are framed by traditional merchant shops where burlap sacks brim with freshly dried nutmeg, star anise, clove buds, mace, and dried ginger roots. Stroll along the storefronts where the rich aromas of roasting coffee beans and freshly crushed spices mingle in the air. The bazaar is also known for local artisanal woodcarvings, handcrafted brass lamps, organic forest honey collected by indigenous tribes, and cold-pressed coconut and sesame oils, offering travelers an authentic opportunity to browse and shop at their own pace.
4. Kadathanadan Kalari & Navarasa Kathakali

The performance begins with a Kathakali demonstration, where classically trained actors apply intricate mineral-based face makeup before using subtle facial mudras and eye movements to enact timeless Hindu epics. The show transitions into Kalaripayattu, recognized as the world's oldest martial art, originating in Kerala during the 11th century. Inside a traditional sunken earth arena (Kalari), master practitioners demonstrate lightning-fast acrobatic leaps, wooden staff combat, and thrilling sparks from metal sword and shield sparring, delivering a mesmerizing display of balance, discipline, and ancient battlefield agility.

Your houseboat slowly maneuvers through intimate village canals, offering a respectful glimpse into everyday backwater life.
