This magnificent monument was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 as a final resting place for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and it also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan himself. The tomb is the main attraction of a sprawling 17-hectare (42-acre) complex that includes a mosque and a guest house, and is surrounded by formal gardens enclosed by a crenellated wall on three sides.
