Mount Etna 3,000m: Small group 6-Hour Trek with a Certified Guide

Board our 4×4 jeeps and leave the Riviera dei Limoni behind as we head towards Etna’s villages and volcanic slopes. Following ancient mule tracks and charcoal burners’ paths, we reach the protected area of Etna Park at around 1,000 metres. Cold lava flows cut across forests of chestnut, pine, oak and beech, alongside native Etna birches and brooms. Eruptive cones and lava valleys reveal over 500,000 years of volcanic activity. A nature trail leads us to the rim of a lateral crater, part of a typical row of cones known as a “bottoniera”. Here, we explain how volcanic cones form and explore the features of Etna’s eruptions, admiring the colours of lava and feeling the varied textures of pyroclastic rocks. We then venture into the woodland to discover one of Etna’s roughly 190 lava flow caves. Descending beneath the surface, we explore the volcano’s remarkable hidden underground world. Our adventure ends with a journey back through Etna Park, crossing ancient lava flows as we return home.
